Abstract

Bodybuilding is a modality that aims at hypertrophy and symmetry, which require very intense nutritional, pharmacological and muscular practices. The diet follows two phases: off-season, which is the phase in which the athlete aims to gain muscle mass; pre contest that the athlete seeks the greatest loss of body fat while maintaining the lowest percentage of fat. Therefore, this literature review aims to expand knowledge about nutritional strategies in the week before the bodybuilding championship. The present work is a narrative, exploratory and qualitative literature review, non-systematic and with no intention of exhausting the sources of information. Scientific articles available in the PubMed, MedLine, Science Direct, Scielo, Lilacs, Bvs and Google Scholar databases were used. The studies evaluated showed that to prepare for competition, athletes employ year-round nutrition and training strategies based on a “competition preparation phase” during the season and a “recovery/bulking phase” outside of the season. season. In addition to regular resistance training, during competition preparation, most bodybuilders follow high-protein, calorie-restricted diets and aerobic exercise. Therefore, nutritional monitoring of these athletes is essential.
