DIETARY SUPPLEMENTATION WITH COCONUT OIL: NARRATIVE REVIEW
Abstract
Coconut oil obtained from pressing the fruit of the Cocos nucifera L. species has lauric acid, a type of saturated lipid, as its main compound. This oil has been widely consumed as a dietary supplement, especially in moments before physical exercise, to accelerate basal metabolism. The objective of this work was to describe the benefits, harms, and general characteristics of coconut oil through a narrative literature review. The search for articles was carried out in the SciELO, LILACS, and Bireme databases. 40 articles were eligible, which were analyzed. Some of the selected articles showed that in addition to increasing energy expenditure, coconut oil has a thermogenic effect, acting as a support for the loss of body fat, weight loss, and a significant reduction in abdominal fat. Coconut oil has also been reported to contribute to the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins; control blood glucose and insulin levels; and improve cholesterol; It has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal action, helping to combat various pathogenic microorganisms. Other results have shown that the uncontrolled use of coconut oil can cause some side effects. In this sense, use as a supplement by those who practice physical activity must be cautious and under the guidance of a professional in the field.Additional Files
