Abstract

Malignant neoplasms, especially those that progress slowly, can be diagnosed late, causing intense catabolic changes in the patient, such as malnutrition and cachexia. These changes are associated with increased postoperative morbidity and mortality and less tolerance to surgical, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy procedures. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the nutritional status of cancer patients and their recovery and success in treating the disease through a narrative literature review. The methodology of this work was based on bibliographical research, using the databases: Scielo, Chochraine, and Capes. After the initial search, 47 articles were selected and used, dating from 1982 to 2015. The articles showed that it is important that the patient be aware of the need for specialized nutritional care and demand that the relevant nutritional guidelines be included in their treatment. to your current difficulties. Only professionals trained in clinical nutrition applied to oncology will be able to correctly evaluate, diagnose, and treat these changes, considering the particularities of the disease. In this sense, professionals interested in managing cancer patients must be aware of the need to acquire knowledge for success in their daily work.
