Abstract

ABSTRACT A tracheostomy is a procedure that involves creating an opening in the trachea to facilitate breathing in cases of airway obstruction or to provide ventilatory support. Care for tracheostomized patients is comprehensive and must consider all aspects of their health, physical and even emotional well-being. However, complications may occur during the procedures. Tracheostomy, despite being a vital procedure for many patients, presents risks that must be carefully managed. The objective of the present study was to describe nursing care and possible complications with tracheostomy. The research was carried out through an integrative review. Articles were searched in the Medline, Lilacs, VHL and Scielo databases. Studies were included between the years 2013 and 2024, in Portuguese, Spanish and English. The nursing team plays a crucial role in preventing complications through evidence-based practices and a patient safety-centered approach. Ongoing education and constant vigilance are essential to improving outcomes and quality of life for tracheostomy patients. Therefore, the study not only contributes to clinical practice, but also to the advancement of knowledge in the area of nursing. By investigating and documenting best practices in tracheostomy care, the study can serve as a valuable reference for future healthcare professionals and researchers interested in this specific area.
