Ovarian Remnat syndrome in the bitch: a review

Abstract

The increasing inclusion of companion animals in humans’ lives made castration, a procedure that removes reproductive organs, more accepted and sought, especially in females. Also, this surgery has therapeutic purposes for conditions, being a preventive method for diseases and population control. However, failures in the technique can keep a residual ovarian tissue inside the female leading to Ovarian Remnant Syndrome (ORS). Therefore, the aim of this work was to gather a compilation of scientific papers on database sites such as Google Scholar; Scielo; Capes Periodicals; PubMed and Elsevier, to, through an integrative review, describe the main aspects of this disease, show how necessary pre-operative exams and observation of animals are in relation to physiological and non-physiological reproductive manifestations, in addition to demonstrate the consequences of this pathology as the persistence of heat, ovarian cysts, stump pyometra and even metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus.
