Abstract

Introduction: Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics, typically starting in childhood. The most common treatment for this syndrome involves the administration of drugs used for other associated diseases, often in high doses, which can lead to undesirable side effects. To address these issues, behavioral therapies have been developed to empower patients, enhance cognitive control, and reduce inefficient pharmacological administration. Objective: To compare behavioral and pharmacological therapies, along with their advantages and disadvantages, applied in the management of Tourette Syndrome. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted in March and April 2024. Results and Discussion: Eleven scientific articles were selected, read, and interpreted for this study. The analysis indicates that there is a need to investigate the effects of the medications used, as well as to expand the scope of effective behavioral therapy. Conclusion: The management of Tourette Syndrome involves various approaches, including behavioral, pharmacological, and even a combination of both. However, there are still limitations in the effectiveness of treatments, highlighting the need for further, more in-depth studies.
