Abstract

Self-esteem is the value that an individual attributes to oneself, based on subjective considerations and personal experiences. This topic, when related to the elderly, is considered complex, with causes and consequences being relative and varying for each individual. Given this, this study conducted a literature review, using the descriptors "Aging and Self-esteem" on the Pepsic and Scielo platforms. Nineteen scientific articles were identified from the period 2014 to 2023. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, six articles were selected to compose the present study, with the aim of understanding the relationship between self-esteem and the elderly. The findings of this research reveal significant conclusions about the relationship between self-esteem and different aspects of life. It was found that self-esteem is positively correlated with quality of life, indicating the importance of this factor for overall well-being. Furthermore, regular engagement in physical activities has emerged as a notable contributor to the promotion of healthy self-esteem. It is imperative to recognize the importance of psychological intervention strategies, especially in promoting self-esteem, aiming not only for mental health but also for enriching the life experience in different contexts and stages of life.
