Abstract

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) has emerged as a new therapy, supporting endodontic treatment, with the objective of eliminating persistent microorganisms in mechanical chemical preparation. The purpose of this study was to carry out an integrative literature review on the applications of photodynamic therapy in endodontic treatment. Data collection was performed in the Pubmed (Medline database of the National Library of Medicine) and LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences), using the associated descriptors “endodontics”; “photochemotherapy” and the keyword “Photodynamic therapy”. The inclusion criteria adopted were: original articles, available online in full and free of charge, in English, Portuguese or Spanish, with no time frame and that are within the investigated theme. According to the articles analyzed, the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) showed effectiveness on persistent microorganisms present in endodontic infections. Several recent studies seek to assess the effectiveness of various substances that combined with PDT can provide a better result. All these alternatives brought positive results. It is suggested to carry out more studies that address cost-effectiveness, thus managing to identify the alternative that has a better result at a more accessible cost.
