Abstract

The use of intracanal medication in endodontic treatment, with an emphasis on calcium hydroxide in its pure form and its combinations, is considered the first-choice medication due to its superior results, possessing antimicrobial properties and the ability to form a mineralized barrier. One example of a combination that can be used is calcium hydroxide associated with substances such as camphorated paramonochlorophenol (CPMC) or chlorhexidine to enhance its antimicrobial efficacy. The duration of the medication's presence in the canal is essential to ensure its effectiveness, with a recommended period that allows for the diffusion of hydroxyl ions through the dentin. The success of endodontic treatment is directly related to effective medication that ensures disinfection and reduces pathogenic organisms. Additionally, it is crucial for the practitioner to perform proper instrumentation of the root canal to remove as much infected pulpal tissue as possible and to promote canal cleaning, thereby preparing them to receive the intracanal medication.
