Abstract

Objective: The practice of yoga, rooted in ancient Indian traditions, has emerged as a noteworthy non-pharmacological alternative for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus. This article explores the impact of yoga on the health of T2DM patients, addressing its relation to glycemic control, lipid profile and other markers. Methods: The narrative literature review, conducted through searches on databases such as PubMed and BVS, highlights 11 relevant studies from the last 5 years. Results: The results demonstrate significant improvements in glycemic control, reduction of oxidative stress, benefits in lipid profile and body mass index (BMI), along with positive impacts on quality of life and treatment adherence. Conclusion: The analysis also considers the effectiveness of yoga at different times and its application in the context of the Unified Health System (SUS). It is concluded that yoga is a safe, low-cost, and efficient therapeutic tool, offering substantial benefits in the adjuvant treatment of T2DM patients, suggesting its potential expansion within SUS.
