UM OUTRO OLHAR PARA A QUALIDADE DE VIDA

Abstract

Brazilian’s scenario of epidemiological transition shows an increase in chronic-degenerative, infectious and neoplastic diseases, which leads to discussions about quality of life. As a consequence, palliative care (PC) is crucial in this topic. There are, however, several barriers to its application and, among them, the misunderstanding of what they are about, being placed frequently as a synonym for the end of life or giving up, in addition to the lack of knowledge among health professionals themselves who, by reinforcing this idea, deprive many patients and their family members to live with quality and fully, as possible. In view of this, to complement knowledge, which begins in academic life, the Academic League of Medical Humanities and PC – UNIFENAS BH (LAHM) plays an important role in showing, with scientific data and personal experiences, that PC is a right for everyone and must be offered and, above all, demystified. Through monthly symposiums and classes, the league promotes not only scientific knowledge, by addressing varied topics, with a multidisciplinary approach, such as communicating bad news, managing chronic pain, as well as training non-technical skills, such as empathy, humanization and attentive listening. Complementing the medical curriculum while still in college is essential to form qualified and compassionate professionals when dealing with the pain of others and your own’s. As relevant as knowledge of anatomy is knowing how to reduce communication noise and make such a delicate topic as PC understandable, so that they are able to embrace someone’s total pain: physical, spiritual, social and mental.
