Abstract

Introduction. Accessibility means providing people with conditions to reach and use, safely and independently, urban spaces, means of transport, buildings, etc. Looking at the present day, it is notable that accessibility for people with disabilities needs many improvements. Objective. To develop an automated cane, using a set of embedded systems and programming tools. Methodology. The cane simulates a kind of second eye, the same method used in guide dogs. Its main function is to capture obstacles in the user's path. Embedded system components were used that add cost savings and potential functionality, including an Arduino Uno R3 board, ultrasonic sensors, buzzer, vibration sensor. Sound signals are returned along with a vibration in the cane, warning of obstacles in the path. Results. The device has ergonomics suitable for comfortable use, where the entire component is housed inside a case, which can be placed on the user's waist. The device works efficiently with a pair of ultrasonic sensors capable of identifying even small objects in front of it. Conclusion. possible to observe the practicality and greater security provided by the device. The technology applied to help people with visual impairments brings with it an affordable cost and better living conditions for such users. From this perspective, future work will be developed in order to improve the results obtained. This way, the user will have more detailed feedback on their journey, without needing conventional methods, such as: guide dog, folding cane, among others.
